Fabrica de Bere Ursus Cluj
The Ursus Brewery (Fabrica de Bere Ursus) is a unique place in Cluj, placed in a location steeped in history, imbued with the history of Cluj.
Decorated in a style that absolutely unique, Fabrica de Bere means “The Bar’s Room”, “The Malt’s Room, “The Laboratory’s Room” or “The Restaurant’s Room”, four suggestively named rooms on the premises in accordance with the decor of each room. But the most interesting element of decor is that consumers can witness the brewing process, because it can follow through glass walls that reveal the production line. No wonder the place is called the Beer Factory, unpasteurized beer from Cluj being made of traditional ingredients – water, malt, hops and yeast – the process and the recipe is a guarantee of the freshness of the unfiltered beer.
The history of Ursus beer is closely linked to events that occurred over time in Cluj. According to information found in the National Archives in the early eighteenth century was a brewery established in the town. Jesuit monks who resided in Mănăştur Monastery, Calvary, established a beer house there (Sorhaz in Hungarian), operated through intermediaries that they had taken on lease. It was common practice at the time and other bishops of the country also owned breweries. The Jesuit monks were expelled in 1773, and the Roman-Catholic church took over monastic areas of Mănăştur, including the brewery.
Although the main attraction of the Brewery is undoubtedly the Ursus Beer – unfiltered, Premium, Black and Alcohol Free (served on draft or in bottles), you should know that this is one of the most popular restaurants in town, the food that is served here perfectly complements the premises branded beverage: beer Ursus. So whether you opt for marinated pork ribs that cooked in the oven with coriander, mustard seeds, honey and fresh thyme, beef baked in the oven with vegetables, orange, thyme and chili, served in a white wine sauce or the delicious smoked pork prepared with vegetables, herbs (thyme, rosemary and bay leaves) served with cabbage and potatoes with garlic, the freshness and culinary taste shown always guarantees the perfect choice. We recommend for lunch (Hungarian goulash, slightly spicy and prepared from beef – ideal for a gourmet break) or even a dinner between friends, enjoyed with a large quantity of Ursus beer!
